Kalkara-Mdina K 1-1

This match between two teams occupying a mid-table position ended in the sharing of the spoils in a match played in heavy thunderstorms.

After only five minutes Mdina had a shot by Ian Sammut which just missed the target and in the 25th minute they were denied by Elvin Attard off a Matthew Francalanza volley.

Kalkara replied through Kevin Tonna who hit just wide from a good position with Attard responding through Clint Caruana whose effort was blocked by Attard.

Six minutes before the break Mdina broke the deadlock through Matthew Francalanza.

Gzira Qrendi 0-3

Gzira United continued with their disappointing season as they were outplayed by a superior Qrendi who notched their ninth win of the season.

Qrendi played the better football during the first 45 minutes and after being denied by Ablett off a close-range shot by Kurt Grima, they managed to break the deadlock in the 26th minute as Tano Farrugia had no difficulty in beating the Gzira keeper following a corner.

Qrendi maintained the initiative and they made it 2-0 seconds before the interval through Winston Fenech.

On 63 minutes Tano Farrugia added a third goal following a good move by Joe Mercieca and they were then again quite close on various other occasions.

Xghajra T-Sirens 1-1

A goal scored by Xghajra’s substitute Adrian Agius in the 95th minute denied Sirens who seemed heading towards an important win in their bid to obtain promotion to the Second Division.

Sirens remained one point behind leaders Mgarr United. After three minutes Sirens were close through a Clyde Grech free-kick and on the half-hour a free-kick taken by Patrick Barbara was finished off by Kristian Galea who was however ruled to be in an offside position and the goal was annulled.

On 37 minutes Sirens broke the deadlock through a penalty given for a foul on Calum Muscat and duly converted by Etienne Bonnici.

On the stroke of half time the Xghajra keeper Keith Galea brought off a marvellous save to deny Adrian Galea.

After the change of ends play resulted in the midfield sector with both defences dominating the proceedings. Xghajra lost Martin Portelli in the 81st minute when he was sent off for a double caution but they were still good enough to draw level in the 95th minute through substitute Adrian Agius.

Kirkop-Zurrieq 0-2

This was a deserved win for Zurrieq who maintained their promotion challenge.

After four minutes Zurrieq were close through Michael Abdilla and on another occasion Matthew Genuis hit just wide from close-range.

Robert Bajada gave Zurrieq a deserved lead on 10 minutes with Daniel Zammit making it 2-0 in the 38th minute with a strong shot from the edge of the penalty area.

Fgura-Ghaxaq 3-2

This was a poor performance for Fgura United but they still managed to grab three important points through a late goal scored by Aldo Pace.

After 11 minutes Ghaxaq broke the deadlock through a direct free-kick taken by veteran Maurice Muscat.

Fgura’s immediate reaction produced a point-blank shot by Clint Ellul which was somehow saved by Paul Celeste and in the 26th minute Ellul all alone infront of goal headed wide.

Just before the break Fgura were again close through Silvano Pace but three minutes after the restart they equalised through Ivan Cassar’s penalty-kick, given when Ghaxaq’s defender handled the ball inside his penalty area.

Then Clint Ellul hit just wide with a low shot but on 62 minutes Maurice Muscat scored his second goal to put Ghaxaq 2-1 ahead.

Ghaxaq were then unlucky as Bjorn Dalli’s shot bounced off the crossbar but in the 76th minute it was two-all with Fgura equalising through Eric Lia.

Late in the match Eric Lia was very close as his shot was saved by Celeste who was at fault in Fgura’s winning goal scored by Aldo Pace two minutes from time.

In injury-time Ghaxaq’s substitute Justin Camilleri was sent off for a double caution.
