Hockey – National League: Six In a row for Rabat Depiro

Malta Independent Friday, 30 March 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

It’s a script already written before…Rabat Depiro Malta Hockey Champions – for the eight time, the sixth in succession. Ta’ Soldi have now exceeded the five consecutive titles won by Young Stars in the late seventies and early eighties. Comparisons are odious and it would not be fair to compare the two sides for the simple reason that the circumstances of the game are completely and extremely different. Ta’ Soldi have however certainly written themselves into the history books and, ironically their season did not get off to a particularly good start.

Following their clean sweep of the 2005/06 honours, Ta’ Soldi started the season by losing the Super Cup to BDO Hs and being dumped out of the Challenge Cup at the semi-final stage by The Hunters Tower YS. Once the League started it was a different story. Nine victories out of nine and the Championship wrapped up with three matches left to play. Their League victory this year must be one of the quickest on record.

On Sunday they picked up the three points they needed with a 2-1 victory over BDO Hs. An early penalty stroke from James Azzopardi and a short corner conversion from Shawn Falzon gave them a two goal advantage in the first half. A second half penalty conversion from Shawn Mifsud cut the gap but was not enough for BDO Hs.

The 1-1 draw in the second game between The Hunters Tower YS and Qormi Poiatti mathematically handed the title to Ta’ Soldi. Chris Attard missed a penalty stroke for The Hunters Tower during the first half. Rudolph Camilleri (Poiatti Qormi) and Ivan Magro (The Hunters Tower) got the goals in the second half. This draw now leaves The Hunters Tower with a slight advantage over Qormi Poiatti in the battle for the runner-up spot.

With the league title in the bag Ta’ Soldi can now concentrate on their two next objectives for the season – the KO Trophy and participation in the EuroHockey Club Champions Challenge 1 being held in Rome between the 24 and 27 of May.
