As part of the Easter festivities organised by St James Cavalier, Dù Theatre Group will be presenting Every Woman on 7 and 12 April at the church of St Catherine of Italy in Valletta.

The piece uses as a starting point mediaeval morality/miracle plays, in particular extracts from Everyman and The Chester Cycle as well as excerpts from the Bible.

Being an all-female ensemble and using these excerpts, the piece revolves around the journey of an Every Woman through the thematic and metaphoric trials and tribulations of Christ during chosen episodes of His Passion, from a more mortal and more importantly female perspective.

We meet Every Woman at the beginning of her life when, young, naïve and pure, she is sent on a mysterious journey by four jocular, eerily mischievous and grotesque characters calling themselves by each element – Fire, Water, Earth and Air. What ensues is a cycle through which Every Woman will stain, cleanse, purge and re-new her original purity with the help, and at times hindrance, of these four strange characters who guide her way.

Set against the predominant themes of Temptation, Ceremony, Crucifixion and Resurrection of our Lord’s Passion, we will join this woman as, through a symbolic passage, she experiences these themes through episodic milestones inherent to any female’s life: puberty, marriage, childbirth and death. The piece will seek to draw parallels between the two voyages in an attempt to highlight the similarities and complimentary qualities that exist between the Lord’s Passion, the aim of which was to deliver mankind, and the way a woman’s journey on earth is at times an extension, on a more mortal level, of the Lord’s work during the transitory period He spent among mankind.

The five-strong female cast consists of Kristjana Casha, Magda van Kuilenburg, Franica Pulis, Simone Spiteri and Victoria Vella.

The piece will be accompanied by live music, composed and performed by Michael Galea and Andrew Alamango, and songs and voice work created by Tim Ellis.

Every Woman will be performed at the church of St Catherine of Italy, Valletta (next to Castille and the police station).
