The European Union has celebrated its 50th birthday, and it did so with activities held in Berlin (Germany is currently holding the EU presidency), while the member states also held events “at home”.

I was rather surprised that Malta’s participation in these European events was rather “weak”. Apart from an exhibition in Republic Street and a few activities held on Sunday 25 March in Valletta, nothing else happened.

The question I ask is what led the government to adopt such a low profile on the matter. I am sure that if Malta was still seeking European Union membership we would have had a fireworks display in Grand Harbour – at least that – as part of a promotional campaign. So why nothing much happened now that we have become members? Why did the government take a low-profile attitude?

Makes me wonder.
