St Patrick obtained a second consecutive victory to keep marching on and now they have an outside chance of gaining promotion. The match was very balanced and keenly contested with St Patrick dominating the first half, with the Stars returning strongly in the second part.
However the Saints victory was a legitimate one as they hit the posts on two occasions apart from having other scoring chances. Vittoriosa had their good moments in the second half but failed to obtain the equaliser.
In the end St Patrick regained control of the match to score a late second goal and put their minds at rest.
Vittoriosa started like a house on fire creating some panic in the Saints defence. On ten minutes they had their best chance when Charles Cachia passed back to the onrushing Robert Adami who blasted over the bar.
However the Saints, although without Gordon Failla in midfield, had in Brazilian star Costa Brazilino a perfect maestro. He orchestrated all their moves. St Patrick started to move better on the field of play even if they were lucky in the goal they scored on 14 minutes.
Clayton Micallef from more than 40 metres effected a curling cross-shot that completelty deceived goalkeeper Ivan Cassar who only managed to tip the ball against the upright with the ball bouncing in the net.
However they were rather unlucky six minutes later when a Matthew Fleri Soler header was cleared off the goal line by Silvan Privitelli.
St Patrick were now all over the opponents as Vittoriosa passed through some anxious moments. Steve Dimech had a very high work rate on the right flank and missed a couple of good chances hitting the side netting on 38 minutes.
The Stars surged forward in the second half and the Saints lost much of their composure. However St Patrick were unlucky on 51 minutes when a Kenneth Abela grounder hit the base of the upright.
Two minutes later Vittoriosa had an open scoring chance but Anywanna, completely unmarked on the penalty spot, shot incredibly wide. On 57 minutes from an Adami cross from the right, Charles Cachia dashed for the ball but his shot hit the crossbar. Adami was again instrumental minutes later but his shot was well saved by David Cassar.
The Stars eased their pressure in the last part of the match and St Patrick almost doubled the score on 80 minutes when another Matthew Fleri Soler header was saved off the line by substitute Duncan Burke. Minutes later a Steve Dimech header was brilliantly saved by Ivan Cassar.
On 90 minutes Kenneth Abela was pushed inside the area by substitute Howard Hughes for an obvious penalty and from the penalty spot the same Kenneth Abela sealed the issue for St Patrick.
