A woman was yesterday conditionally discharged for three years after being found guilty of falsification and fraud.

Mildred Pace, 29, from Zabbar was found guilty of tampering with car log books on various occasions between 1998 and 1999.

She was also found guilty of making about Lm1,000 in fraudulent profit at the expense of customers who bought vehicles from Montebello Enterprises Ltd and of falsifying public documents, accepting payment in order to do so, forging signatures and carrying out all of the above in her role as a public official within the Licensing Directorate.

The police had carried out investigations and found that log books of 45 vehicles imported by Montebello Enterprises had been altered through accessing the system with the accused’s user name.

In her statement to the police, Pace said she used to receive instructions from a man who paid her between Lm10 and Lm50 for each alteration.

In court, she altered her version of events and said that she had never accepted payment for carrying out such tasks. She also said that she had received no training for the job.

The court, presided over by magistrate Giovanni Grixti, conditionally discharged Pace for three years. Police inspector Angelo Gafà prosecuted.
