I would like to join in the current debate – if you can call it such, considering that it is a question of a few people against the rest – with regard to the idea of removing the George Cross from the Maltese national flag.

The George Cross was given to Malta in 1942 because the Maltese had then showed courage and bravery during the Second World War. It belongs to the nation, and nothing will change that. It belongs to all of us.

The fact that Malta is no longer a British colony, earned its independence in 1964 and now is also a member of the European Union does not change the fact that it is a historical memento that we should all be proud of and cherish.

Had Malta surrendered to the Germans, then history would not be as we know it today, and the world might be very different from what it is today. Maybe the EU would not exist either.

History cannot be re-written. The Maltese contributed in the fight against the Axis powers and they were rewarded for it. That reward should not be cancelled because someone thinks it should be.

The national flag is something that represents us all; it is part of the Maltese nation, and as such we should treat it with respect.
