Football – Bank Of Valletta third division: Luqa keep in touch with the leaders

Luqa SA-Gharghur 1-0

An Alessandro Pirrone goal ten minutes from time was enough for Luqa to win against Gharghur to keep in touch with the teams challenging for promotion honours.

Luqa gained the initiative during the first-half and in the 25th minute an Emanuel Cumbo free-kick was saved by Edwards. Then shots by Randolph Penza and Owen Psaila went inches wide of the far post and just before the end of the first period Mark Said wasted an easy opportunity.

Early on in the second half Luqa twice went close through Randolph Penza and Emanuel Cumbo.

Gharghur replied through shots by Debattista and Cachia which were well saved by Agius but on 79 minutes Luqa took the lead with Penza’s through-pass finding Alessandro Pirrone who beat Edwards with a low angled shot. Late in the match Gharghur hit the post through a Matthew Coleiro corner-kick.

Fgura-Attard 1-1

Attard were worthy of the point they obtained against leaders Fgura United who ended the match with ten players after having Anthony Borg sent off nine minutes from time.

The first period proved to be a balanced affair with Attard wasting two easy goal scoring opportunities through Elon Cassar. Fgura went close through an Eric Lia free-kick and on another occasion Attard’s defender Alex Gambin almost committed an own-goal as his clearance hit the crossbar.

In the 30th minute Fgura broke the deadlock with Ivan Cassar crossing for Vince Testaferrata to beat Formosa from close-range.

Just before the break Attard were denied by Farrugia off a Louis Buhagiar free-kick but they managed to equalise through Fabian Cutajar in the 57th minute.

Fgura created two clear opportunities through Josef Borg and Clint Ellul but they suffered a severe setback in the 81st minute as Anthony Borg was booked for a second time and was sent off.

In added time Attard were denied the winning goal as Farrugia blocked off a point-blank shot by Fabian Cutajar.

St Lucia- Ghaxaq 1-2

This direct clash between two teams at the lower end of the league table was deservedly won by Ghaxaq through two goals scored by Kim Caruana.

After only six minutes Ghaxaq broke the deadlock as Ludvic Camilleri crossed for Kim Caruana to beat Brincat from close-range. Ghaxaq were again close through Christian Cristiano and Ludvic Camilleri which were well saved by Brincat with the Saints replying through a Brignone free-kick which was saved with difficulty by Celeste.

However Anthony Brignone had better luck in the 27th minute when he shot in with a low shot to make it one-all.

Four minutes into the second half Maurice Muscat went close for Ghaxaq and at the other end the Ghaxaq keeper Celeste saved off a strong shot by Jesmond Schembri.

Ghaxaq then hit the upright through Ludvic Camilleri and on another occasion an attempt by Cristiano was blocked on the goal line. Four minutes from time a mistake by the Saints’ keeper led to Ghaxaq’s winning goal scored by Kim Caruana.

Zejtun-Siggiewi 2-3

Zejtun Corinthians seemed heading towards a win when they led 2-0 at the end of the first-half but Siggiewi scored three goals after thhe interval to gain a merited win.

Zejtun were the better team during the first half with Dino Falzon putting them ahead after 12 minutes.

At the other end Siggiewi were close through Josef Vassallo whose shot was cleared by Elton Caruana off the goal line. Zejtun replied through dangerous attempts by Marco Gerada and Godwin Mifsud with Siggiewi hitting the crossbar through Jonathan Debono.

In the 38th minute Zejtun made it 2-0 through a beautiful shot by Dino Falzon and five minutes later a Marco Gerada penalty was well saved by the Siggiewi goalkeeper Vella.

Siggiewi dominated the second half with Chris Bezzina pulling a goal back on the hour.

Then they hit the post through Josef Vassallo but Siggiewi made it two-all in the 63rd minute through Godfrey Camilleri. The Zejtun keeper then brought off various saves but Siggiewi scored the winning goal ten minutes from time through Josef Vassallo.

Mdina K-Pembroke 0-0

Mdina Knights played the better football and created the best chances but Pembroke were well worth the point they obtained as they played a sound defensive match.

The Knights held the initiative for long stretches during the first half and early on a strong shot by James Vella was excellently saved by Debattista.

Pembroke replied through a Nicky Aquilina free-kick which went inches wide and at the other end Mdina created a dangerous opportunity through Matthew Francalanza.

In a Pembroke counter-attack Carlo Leonardi hit just wide following a personal effort. On 68 minutes Mdina were very close to opening the score as Neville Pullicino’s close-range effort was cleared off the line with Pembroke responding through Andre Cachia who hit just wide. Mdina then wasted a sitter through Pullicino and late in the match were again close through James Vella.

Kalkara-Gzira 2-0

Although the Maroons did much of the attacking, it was Kalkara who managed to take the three points for their sixth win of the season. After ten minutes Gzira won a free-kick which was taken by Antonio Camilleri and Keith Bonello headed just over the crossbar.

Then a shot by Nico Corito was saved by Attard but on the half-hour Kalkara’s captain Nicky Gatt headed in from a Chris Borg corner-kick to open the score.

On 37 minutes Gzira doubled their lead through an own-goal as Gzira’s defender Antonio Camilleri lobbed the ball over his team mate Omar Ablett.

Early on during the second period Hubert Gatt Bonello twice went close for Gzira with Kalkara responding through Kevin Tonna whose lob was saved on the goal line by Ablett.

Late in the match Gzira wasted an easy opportunity through William Mallia.
