The speed camera on the Regional Road, in the direction of Paceville, has been removed and put up in St Andrew’s Road, on the way down to the Splash and Fun Park.

Unlike Xemxija Hill, where the speed camera was removed but the signs warning motorists were not, this time round the Malta Transport Authority plans to remove the signs on the Regional Road.

Sources told The Malta Independent on Sunday that ever since the re-construction of the Manwel Dimech Bridge began, the speed camera just outside the tunnel leading to Paceville has not been operational.

Since the dual carriageway was changed into a two-way system with concrete bollards separating the two lanes, the speed camera could not pinpoint which car was actually over speeding.

As a result, the camera was taken down and moved to the road leading to the Splash and Fun Park where the speed limit has been set at 70 kilometres per hour.

Malta Transport Authority sources told this newspaper that once the Manwel Dimech Bridge project, which is well behind schedule, has been completed, the speed camera will be re-installed but the 45kph speed limit will be changed, probably to the national speed limit.

Meanwhile, motorists have called this newspaper saying they felt they were being taken for a ride in the name of road safety – there is a speed camera sign on the road from the airport to Marsa and, just like in Xemxija, there is no speed camera on that road.
