The True facts

Malta Independent Wednesday, 11 April 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

As always happens with Valerie Borg’s letters, her biased mind takes her away from the path of facts and reason (TMID 9th April).

The true facts about the hunters and trappers’ position with regard to Malta’s entry into the EU are far different from those known to your correspondent.

The Government could not lie and could not betray anyone because during the process of negotiations with the EU it took all the interested parties into its confidence and worked hand in hand with them to get the best results possible. These included the hunters and trappers association that was continuously informed about the progress being made during the negotiations.

Therefore the problem of lying or betrayal could never arise, as Valerie and her ilk are trying to imply. So if there is anyone to blame for any misunderstanding or misinformation, it is their association.

As regards the hunters’ votes, I am sure that the majority of the Labour-leaning hunters have followed their leader’s advice and voted Labour anyway. So their participation in the referendum and subsequent election did not affect the results. Those who voted for entry into Europe have wisely put the betterment of their families and the future of their children before their hobby.

The hunters and trappers should be reminded that, whatever Valerie and her ilk may try to make them believe, the result of the next general election will change nothing. Those who lied about VAT and cash registers are trying to repeat the same trick again. I hope that this time the voters are wiser.

Valerie Borg rightly wrote that the Spanish PM was not re-elected because he had lied to the Spanish people. She should not have gone so far. Here in Malta, the Labour PM was thrown into the opposition benches for the same reason.
