The third tournament from the British Airways Youth League 2006-07 proved to be quite successful, considering the good number of participants as well as the ever improving standard of wrestling seen in all weight and age categories.
Furtu Selvatico Wrestling Team of Naxxar placed first in the team classification totalling 79 points, just two points ahead of Stella Maris College who this time had to content with second place. On the other hand Qawra Wrestling Club came third with 17 points.
The most interesting bout of all was that between Adam Vella of Stella Maris College and Andrea Saliba of Furtu Selvatico in the -60kg. After each winning three bouts these two most promising young wrestlers met to decide first place.
Saliba narrowly won the first period with Vella equalising by winning the second one. Towards the end of the third and final period the Stella Maris wrestler caught his opponent into a tight hold to finish winner of bout and category.
It was pleasing to note that the bout was fought in the best of sporting spirit as is always the case in Olympic style wrestling.
Other wrestlers who caught the eye in this competition were Aidan Buhagiar and Matthew Bonnici, both of Stella Maris, as well as young Duncan Farrugia of Furtu Selvatico. Nine year old Gary Giordemaina won the -30 kg winning against Luke Mifsud and Michael Saliba of Qawra who were in their first competition.
The competition officials were Abraham Vassallo and Lawrence Attard (Referees); Manuel Cilia (Timekeeper); Jesmond Giordemaina (Weighing-In); Simon A. Bonello- Coordinator)
