Theresa Camilleri, the current Malta champion scrabbler, has been invited to participate in the British Masters, scheduled to take place in June/July 2007. The British Masters is the most prestigious event in the Association of British Scrabble Players (ABSP) calendar, open only to the top 16 players according to results obtained over the year.
Theresa has been playing regularly in British tournaments over the past few years and she has established herself as a leading player in these tournaments.
Theresa Camilleri’s participation in this very important tournament is indeed a great honour both for Theresa herself as well as for the Malta Scrabble Club.
In the meantime, Theresa is defending the title which she won for the first time last year in a very interesting National League.
As expected, she is leading a field of seven players who are taking part in the First Division and is the top favourite to retain the title and earn one of the two automatic spots for participation in the World Scrabble Championship which will take place later this year.
In fact the top two players in the National League will be representing Malta in the World Championship, which is expected to take place in the Asian continent. So far the venue has not yet been divulged, but it is almost certain that the Championship will take place in Asia in the final quarter of 2007.
Thanks to the fine performances of Theresa Camilleri and Jojo Delia in the last World Championship, which was held two years ago in London, Malta will have the right to nominate three players for this year’s event. Two players will be chosen from the National League, while the third player will be the highest rated player in the Malta Scrabble Club’s Rating List after obviously excluding the two who qualified through the National League.
Apart from the seven players taking part in the First Division, there are eight players in the Second Division and ten players in the Third Division.
The current standings are as follows:
