The final course in Din l-Art Helwa’s series of short cultural courses this season will be given by Dr Keith Sciberras. Entitled “Understanding Caravaggio’, Dr Sciberras will discuss the powerful naturalism of Caravaggio within the multi-faceted contexts of artistic patronage and style. The course will also focus on Caravaggio’s personality and on the turbulent character of his Roman years.

Dr Sciberras will examine the evidence for Caravaggio’s stay in Malta and raise questions about his motives for coming to the island. The course will identify his protectors and patrons, and discuss the complications that attended his knighthood. Finally, it will place in context the crime he committed in Malta that ultimately led to his disgrace and daring escape to Sicily.

The course will be divided as follows: Part I: Caravaggio – The man, the artist. Part II: Caravaggio – Art, Knighthood, and Malta.

The course will take place on Wednesday from 9am to 12.15pm at Din l-Art Helwa, 133 Melita Street, Valletta. The fee is Lm5 for members and Lm8 for non-members, including a coffee break.
