I would like to express my agreement with Daphne Caruana Galizia’s article on the need to separate Church and State (TMIS, 1 April).

In particular I would like to comment on the government’s decision to allocate Lm5000 to help young people who wish to participate in the Catholic World Youth Day event to be held in Australia.

What if young people wish to participate in the European Gay Pride event in Madrid, or in the Glastonbury music festival in the UK or in any other international youth event not affiliated with the Catholic Church? Wouldn’t these young people also be entitled to government support? Otherwise, would this not constitute discriminatory practice? How can the State justify the allocation of funding based on religious affiliation and not make the same concession on other grounds?
