The popular annual winter San Michel team tennis tournament organised by the Vittoriosa Lawn Tennis Club was recently concluded with the final played last Saturday.

This tournament was sponsored by San Michel and attracted a participation of 72 men and 36 ladies.

Players were divided into six teams and the tournament's captains were John Azzopardi, Joe Vella, Clayton Zammit, JoeCallus, Joe Randich and Carmen Difesa.

The competition was held over a period of 12 weeks with teams playing each other over two rounds, with the top four teams then proceeding to the knockout stage.

In the semi-finals, John Azzopardi’s team beat Clayton Zammit’s team while Joe Vella emerged winner over the team captained by Joe Callus.

In the final played on The Model Shop court, John Azzopardi's team emerged the tournament’s winners beating Joe Vella’s team with a 9-3 scoreline.

This score belies the actual difference displayed on court between the two teams, where John Azzopardi’s team won a total of five sets by tie-breaks.
