Malta Independent Sunday, 15 April 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

Two five-a-side women’s age-group tournaments for the Under-13 and Under-17 categories were organised by the MFA Women Sub-Committee.

The Under-13 tournament was won by Mgarr, winners of Section ‘B’. They beat Birkirkara Yellows, who headed Section ‘A’, 2-1 after netting two last-minute goals.

The runners-up of each section, Pembroke and San Andrea School, contested for third place, with the latter team emerging winners by a solitary goal.

There were 12 teams in the younger age-bracket: Birkirkara Yellows, Pembroke, St, Catherine School, Birzebbugia, Valletta and Hibernians in Section ‘A’ and Mgarr, San Andrea School, St. Venera, Marsa, Birkirkara Reds and Lija/Iklin in Section B.

Six teams took part in the Under-17 competition which was played on a round-robin basis between all sides. Matches were evenly-balanced, with Hibernians just getting the better of Sliema Raiders on the strength of their direct clash after both teams finished equal on points.

Third place went to Mosta, while San Anton School preceded St Venera, both of whom ended on the same number of points. These teams were followed by Lija/Iklin.

At the end of each tournament, medals were presented to all the players. Mr John Farrugia, MFA Vice-President and Chairman of the MFA Women's Committee made the presentation to the girls in the younger category, while Mr Alfred Zammit presented the medals to the Under-17 girls.

The tournaments were held at the Melita FC training pitches, St Andrew's, kindly made available to the MFA organising committee.
