The National Commission for Persons with a Disability yesterday officially launched the Wenzu Dalli Resource Centre, which provides a variety of books, magazines, DVDs, videos and CDs in formats that can be read by all.
The president of the Federation of Organisations of People with a Disability, Marchita Mangiafico explained that the resource centre was named after a person who dedicated his whole life campaigning for people with a disability.
KNPD chairman Joe Camilleri said that although Wenzu Ellul was blind, he enjoyed life and worked hard for people with a disability to have equal opportunities and a better quality of life.
He was a member of the KNPD and president of the Malta Council for Persons with a Disability. Mr Ellul passed away two years ago and the resource centre was inaugurated on the second anniversary of his death.
The commission’s publications are published in different formats making them accessible to all and are available at the resource centre, explained KNPD executive director Freddie Bezzina.
The KNPD yesterday also launched an easy-to-read version, and an audio and large-print version, of the publication Services and Benefits to Persons with Disability, added Mr Bezzina.
The resource centre is in the KNPD’s offices at the Centru Hidma Socjali in Sta Venera. It has over 4,000 books and over 75 categories of subjects.
By the end of February there were already 1,300 members, with an average of 130 books taken out each month.
The resource centre is free of charge to all. The library database can be accessed online through the KNPD website on www.knpd.org.
