Parliament: ‘Mobbing The post office’ for social security cheques

Opposition MP Carmelo Abela demanded to know what the police are doing about what Mr Abela himself called the “rabble” who have taken to gather in front of the Zejtun post office especially when the social security cheques arrive.

They gather there from early in the morning and they disturb the neighbours with obscene language and taunts to people.

Justice Minister Tonio Borg said the police will take the necessary action.

Lm57,000 hospitality bill

The Foreign Ministry spent Lm57,000 in dinners/hospitality during the past year, Foreign Minister Michael Frendo told Labour MP Leo Brincat.

The Maltese embassies on their own spent Lm34,000 of this sum while dinners by the Maltese Foreign Office including lunches totalled Lm17,000 and receptions Lm5,300.

In comparison, the Rural Affairs and Environment Ministry spent just Lm5,700 last year and WasteServ spent a further Lm425.

24 religious employed by government

The number of religious people employed in the public service and by other government bodies is of 24, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi told Labour MP Chris Agius.
