New Ethnographic film

Malta Independent Wednesday, 18 April 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

The seminar series Work in Progress in the Social Studies continues on Monday with an anthropological research film by Steven Vella, lecturer in Visual Anthropology in the Anthropology Division of the University of Malta.

He will be presenting his film research entitled So Sorry, Send THEM Back – A Crisis in Identity and Socio-Political Spatial Encroachment.

The study started when the Anthropology Society asked him to film the December 2005 Ethnic Meal that was being held at the Marsa open centre for asylum seekers. The resulting research took a different turn when he began investigating the matter with a deeper interest in the socio-political situation in Malta and the tensions that have been escalating after the signing of the Dublin Convention.

Mr Vella will be showing the rough cut of this anthropological film. It highlights some of the many “voices” that need to be heard as a preliminary approach to understanding this issue. The viewing is at the University of Malta, Gateway Building Room 114, from 6 to 7pm, followed by discussion.

The public is invited to attend.
