Football – Easter Tournament: Mosta Easter Tournament five years old but still going strong

Malta Independent Friday, 20 April 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

Following the successful outcomes of the football tournament, organised for the past four years through a joint initiative by the Mosta Primary School ‘B’ and the Mosta F.C. Youth Nursery, this year happens to be its fifth anniversary.

After several contacts that took place between the above mentioned school and nursery a one-day long football tournament for both boys and girls from Years 4, 5 and 6 was held at the Mosta football grounds.

Over 250 students applied for a place in the tournament, who were then divided into 25 teams.

In fact after working on last year’s experience, the competition had to be sub-divided into four minor tournaments: one for the female students, one for the boys in year 4, another for the boys in year 5 and the last one for the boys in year 6.

The name of each team was chosen from a specific zone or prominent landmark in the locality of Mosta, such as the Rotunda, Santa Margerita, Bidnija and Wied il-Ghasel – thus , through football, promoting the history and culture of the village.

At the end of the day, each participant was presented with a commemorative medal, while each winning team from every minor tournament was given a shield that will be kept in the classroom of the respective team for the rest of the scholastic year. This year’s winners were as follows:

Girls’ Competition: Victoria Lines

Boys Year 4 Competition: Tat-Torba

Boys Year 5 Competition: Is-Sghajtar

Boys Year 6 Competition: Tal-Wej

This extra-curricular event is also an opportunity to promote the school’s ethos in emphasising the participation of the students’ parents. Around 50 parents applied to provide a helping hand for the needs that may arise on the day. All the work done in preparation for the Easter Football Tournament was under the guidance of the school headmaster Alex Attard and Mosta Tournaments Chairman, Joseph Muscat.

The school PE teacher Mario Azzopardi supervised the whole event, while the school handyman Joe Vella helped in its smooth running. The matches were all officiated by players from the Mosta F.C. Youth Nursery.

The Mosta Local Council, Nectar Ltd and Mosta AutoDealers sponsored this event.

All in all the Easter Football Tournament brought the students closer to each other and enhanced their attitudes towards sports in general, while celebrating the combined effort that the Mosta Primary School ‘B’, the Mosta FC Youth Nursery and the parents are providing for the good of the students.
