PSEU Objects to termination of employment

Malta Independent Saturday, 21 April 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

The Professionals and Services Employees Union (PSEU) is objecting with the Bank of Valletta about the dismissal of four women employees who were employed on a definite contract two years ago.

In a statement, the PSEU said the four workers, three of whom are PSEU members, were employed on 1 June 2005 as customer relations persons. Their contract was renewed for another year last June. Three weeks ago, these employees were informed that their employment would be terminated in June.

PSEU president Karmenu Vella yesterday said that two months ago, the bank had employed a substantial number of people on an indefinite contract without offering the four workers the chance for permanent employment.

The PSEU said it was informed that the work that was now being done by these four employees would start to be carried out by new employees, who were in fact receiving training by these four employees themselves.
