Products made of wood by different craftsmen and woodworking factories in Malta are on show at an exhibition by the Malta Furniture Manufacturers Organisation (MFMO).

“Working in Wood – A Maltese Tradition” may be viewed at St James Cavalier in Valletta every day from today until 13 May.

The MFMO said Maltese craftsmen have been working with wood for centuries, building anything from ships to wooden balconies, doors to church pulpits, and carts to fine furniture, using both imported and local wood.

The tradition was still very strong, it added. Despite competition from imported furniture, the Maltese craftsmen still flourished, building traditional architectural woodwork and beautifully-made furniture to the highest standards and to customer specifications.

The MFMO was set up in 2001 to bring together local furniture manufacturers in sharing common goals and interests. It may hold the exhibition on an annual basis and has initiated talks with the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology with a view to train more people in the woodworking trade.
