I simply cannot understand why the Cospicua local council chose to boycott the opening of what is now known as the Cottonera Garden, simply because the government thought it fit to change the name of the area.

Your leader Cottonera or Bormla (TMID, 18 April) put the matter in perspective, and I do agree that the local council would have reacted differently had it been a Labour government which had carried out such a project and decided to remove the name Il-Mixtla ta’ Bormla.

What must be asked is what have previous Labour governments done to improve the Cottonera area, traditionally a Labour stronghold. The answer is little, if anything at all.

It was a Nationalist government which, over the past years, has turned Cottonera into an area that is more attractive than it was 20 years ago. By simply removing the dockyard wall the PN would have already done enough, but the government went on to develop the Cottonera Waterfront and has now rehabilitated the area which will be known as Cottonera Garden.

Labour supporters in Cottonera know that they have never had it so good. But, as you said, the Labour-led local council cannot be seen as supporting the government in its endeavours to improve the Cottonera area.
