There has been a recent spate of vandal attacks on various public places in the past weeks, most notable among which was the used oil that was thrown at the belvedere overlooking the Blue Grotto.

The Malta Independent (17 April) reported that government workers were finding it hard to remove the oil and thus, the exercise was proving to be costlier.

So the taxpayers are paying more for the removal of the mess, and this when the money could be used for other purposes.

I understand that the police are still investigating this and other incidents that have taken place recently. I do hope that the perpetrators are brought to book and that, when taken to court, they are given a tough sentence which will hopefully serve as a deterrent to others who might have similar intentions.

The spoiling of public places is something that should be condemned by one and all. These places are visited by thousands of tourists and Maltese, and they should be enjoyed by everyone. It is a pity that some hotheads give vent to their frustration and anger by spoiling what belongs to the whole population.
