I do agree with the line of thinking in your leader, Student participation (TMID, 20 April), with regard to the participation of students in the political and social life of the university.

Revolutions abroad have often started with students, and yet in Malta we have students who are only interesting in obtaining their degree and moving on, showing little interest in what goes on around them.

I was a university student myself, and I was among those few who tried to instil in my colleagues a sense of belonging to the nation and taking an interest in what goes on. Yet it was like talking to a brick wall because very few of them showed an inclination towards taking part in activities that went beyond studying.

As you said, today’s students are the leaders of tomorrow, and it is quite unfortunate that there are so many of them who simply do not care – all they want is for the lecture to pass quickly and leave the campus, and entertain themselves during the weekend.
