A man was cleared of committing perjury before a local tribunal yesterday, after a Magistrates’ Court declared that his version of events had been corroborated by another witness.

Magistrate Antonio Mizzi cleared Raymond Martin, 47, from Marsa, of committing perjury when giving evidence during a local tribunal sitting in 2005.

The court heard how, on 14 July 2005, Mr Martin appeared before Zejtun local tribunal to contest a number of traffic tickets he had received from local wardens.

During his testimony, Mr Martin said that he saw one of the wardens who had given him a fine putting his hand in his car, which had a broken window.

On hearing this, the Justice Commissioner who was presiding over the sitting, ruled that Mr Martin was lying and ordered the police to take criminal action against him in court. He also ordered him to pay the fines according to each case.

Magistrate Mizzi yesterday ruled that Mr Martin had not lied and, in fact, his account had been corroborated by another witness who also testified. He therefore cleared him of all the charges brought against him.
