The twelve year old wonder boy from Belgium, Luca Brecel won the title of the first 16 & Under European Snooker Tournament at the Apple Snooker Club in Bugibba. The sixteen year old Maltese player, Thurston Grixti did well in finishing in third place.
During the three day tournament Luca Brecel was registering one big break after another. In fact this tournament could be easily been called the Luca Brecel show.
Luca Brecel won the title by beating Darren Cook from England 5-3 in the Final. The frame scores (Brecel first) were thus: 24-60, 19-62, 77-17, 72-12, 64-26, 78-7, 32-52 and 69-35. Brecel made three breaks of 31, 71 and 78, the last being the highest of the Tournament, while Darren Cook made a 38 break in the second frame. Both players played well and it was a magnificent Final.
The match for third place was won by the Maltese Player Thurston Grixti who beat Nicky Godeyne of Belgium 3-1. The frame scores (Grixti first were thus: 61-50, 28-71, 70-10 and 65-42. Grixti made two breaks of 35 and 39.
The match for 5th and 6th Position Alexander Gauss of Austria beat Alexander Westholm of Sweden 2-0 (64-55 and 67-35) while the match for 7th and 8th place was won by Alexander Gauss of Austria who beat Alexander Westholm of Sweden 2-0. An exhibition between Alex Borg and Simon Zammit took place right after the Final.
Alex Borg and Simon Zammit presented the trophies to the players. A fantastic crowd of around 50 spectators watched the Final. The tournament was sponsored by San Antonio Hotel & Spa.
