Summer University applications are open to all AEGEE-Valletta members, who must hand in their applications by no later than 13 May through the official Summer University web page www.aegee.org/su All youths and students between the ages of 18 to 35 who are interested can contact AEGEE-Valletta for further information and assistance on the application procedure.
A Summer University usually comprises of a two-week event organised by an AEGEE antenna involving about 20 to 60 students from all over Europe. Summer Universities are organised by young volunteers for young people. The activities carried out during a Summer University range from academic activities such as classes in foreign languages and courses on technical themes to multi-cultural activities such as summer student parties and sports activities.
It is the largest volunteer-based mobility programme in Europe and has been exerting its influence in Europe for 20 years now. It involves more than 6,000 young people from 40 European countries, stretching out from Portugal to Azerbaijan, from Finland to Malta. Established in 1988, The Summer University Project (SU) has been developed by AEGEE-Europe as the chief tool in promoting European integration among young citizens. The year 2007 marks the 20th anniversary of the Summer University, making it the longest lasting project in AEGEE history as well as the largest volunteer-based one in Europe.
A multi-cultural perspective is the crux of the project, opening such a dimension to participants and providing a wide spectrum of events. Promoting the rich cultural heritage and fostering mutual understanding among different language communities with a special focus on young people is what the SU is about. They are meant to promote cultural exchange, mutual understanding, language skills (and their importance in personal development) and active citizenship by removing national divisions, overcoming prejudices and upholding a European feeling. Indeed, the project has been nominated several times as a clear example of Student Mobility across Europe.
The 20th anniversary this year will be celebrated in Istanbul at the beginning of November. Students will be able to apply to the congress that aims, among other things, to review the history of the project and its achievements to date, and discuss its future development. Furthermore, the mobility of young people in Europe will be the main topic of this anniversary event.
