Football - BOV Premier League: Marsaxlokk Should win first historic Premier League title this weekend

Malta Independent Saturday, 28 April 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

Marsaxlokk could make their dreams come true this weekend by claiming their first ever Premier League title.

This can happen if Marsaxlokk as expected beat Msida St. Jospeh in tomorrow’s second match at 5pm at The National Stadium Ta’ Qali.

They could even be crowned champions this evening if Sliema fail to beat Birkirkara.

The South Seasides were only a second division outfit six years ago, but they made great strides forwards, and were without any doubt the team to beat this season.

Their expected league win will be their first major honour, having came close to winning the FA Trophy three years ago.

Under the guidance of Brian Talbot who already claimed two titles in the nineties at the helm of Hibernians, Marsaxlokk have found the right mixture of young local talent together with foreign imports.

However unlike their opponents tomorrow Msida St. Joseph, Marsaxlokk have their main assets in the local talent with nine internationals in their ranks.

Whatever the outcome of today’s much expected match between Sliema and Birkirkara, Marsaxolkk should find no difficulty in beating Msida tomorrow and so start their clebrations.

Msida, after astonishing critics in the first phase, had a sudden dip in form, slumping to the sixth place in the Championship Pool.

Msida’s only ray of hope to crown a positive season is the FA Trophy competition, were they will be facing Sliema Wanderers in the semi final.

In today’s first match from the relegation pool, Pieta Hotspurs after assuring themselves of their status at the expense of St. George’s, should beat Marsa, who were relegated weeks ago.

Marsa are still in search of their first Premier League victory this season, and are not expected to beat Carmel Busuttil’s youngsters today.

The ex-Malta star surely did a good job at the helm of the Hotspurs. After some hard moments, Pieta emerged as an energetic outfit, winning the matches that count in the relegation pool.

In the second match this afternoon, Sliema Wanderers cross swords with outgoing champions Birkirkara, for the sixth time this season.

In their previous five encounters Sliema won the first match 1-0 in the Euro Challenge Cup, drew 3-3 in the first phase first round match, with the Wanderers again winning 1-0 in the second round.

In the championship pool Birkirkara obtained their only victory against the Blues beating them 2-1, with Sliema claiming a very important victory in the U*BET FA Trophy quarter final.

Sliema must win this match to keep the pressure on Marsaxlokk while Birkirkara can open the battle for second place if they emerge victorious.

In tomorrow’s other match Hibernians face Valletta in what should be an anticipation of their FA Trophy semi final clash in a few week’s time.
