Waterpolo – Winter League: ASA Youths Are beaten again

Malta Independent Monday, 30 April 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

San Giljan managed to beat the experimental ASA Youths squad yesterday in a match that was not valid for the standings.

This was the Saints' first 'offical' win this season as they quickly took the upper hand in this match.

Matthew Zammit and Claudio Spiteri de Barro (who notched a total of 11 goals between them) scored two goals in the fourth minute but Jerome Gabaretta, who plays for Sliema, quickly replied for the Youths.

However, a minute later, the Saints converted their only man-up in the session and then continued to end the first session 5-1 ahead.

The second session produced two penalties, one on each side and both duly converted into goals by Zammit and Gabaretta respectively.

San Giljan went 12-2 in the lead, with Zammit already grabbing his poker whilst John Xerri de Caro had a brace, before Timothy Agius reduced the margin for the Youths.

The Saints reduced their intensity in the remaining two sessions although they increased the lead to 15-4 by the end of the third session with Hungarian Gabor Toth scoring two goals, the second on a Lubrano exclusion.

The final eight minutes were won 4-2 by the Youths with further goals from Gabaretta and Agius (penalty) as well as Lubrano and Peter Borg.
