I visited Mdina the other day and was impressed by the rehabilitation work that has been done. And by the fact that the residents seem to be spoiled beyond redemption.

I mean, can anyone tell me why the residents should be allowed to drive into their town, and park there, while every other mortal in Malta can not? Why should they be so privileged? Do they guarantee to replace any of the paving, that my taxes helped to pay for, which they spoil by oil dripping from their car?

There are some fancy cars there, of course, which no one would expect to be leaking oil. But many others are as ordinary as mine.

My time of visiting was about 7.30pm. Most residents must have been in their home by then because I was appalled at the sight of this majestic town, resplendent from the renovation, but cluttered everywhere with cars, fancy or not.

The square in front of the Cathedral looked awful.

I imagine wide-ranging exceptions can be made for the residents to drive up to their doorstep, to drop off an elderly relative, for instance, or to unload the shopping. But they should not be allowed to park in there. Not while others like me, who pay the same taxes they pay, cannot even drive in, let alone park in there.

This is discrimination gone mad.
