An exhibition of new books for the libraries in Gozo is being held at the Gozo Public Library until 26 May.

Six hundred new books have been put on display before they are distributed among the chain of libraries in Gozo that include the Gozo Public Library and the Gozo Lending Library, both in Victoria, the library at Gozo General Hospital, and 11 other branch libraries in various villages around the island.

The purchase of the new books, which cover a variety of subjects that address the educational needs of students and the general public, was funded by the Gozo Ministry.

Demand for services at all Gozitan libraries has increased in recent years, with new members registering annually. There were 760 new memberships registered last year, while around 5,900 people availed themselves of the internet service, which is available following the investment in new IT equipment by the Gozo Ministry the year before. A total of 117,881 books were borrowed in the past year, while 135 children at primary level attended story-telling sessions. Library orientation visits for schoolchildren with their teachers and parents are also organised regularly.

In a short address at the opening of the exhibition, Head of Secretariat Anthony Borg, representing Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono, stressed the importance that should be given to books, notwithstanding today’s era of cyber-media and information technology.

Apart from serving as a means of education and learning, the book is also man’s friend. Classical literature, together with books about history and culture, enrich the reader, instilling in him the qualities of a cultured person, he said.
