Football – Bank Of Valletta second division: St Andrew’s end commitments with fine victory over Gudja

Malta Independent Wednesday, 2 May 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

The Saints ended their league commitments with a fine win but their fate depends on Zebbug Rangers' match against Rabat Ajax. If Zebbug win against the Ajax, both teams will finish on equal points and a decider will be necessary.

The Saints dominated the first period and after five minutes Jonathan Briscoe White passed for Ian Borg whose shot was saved by Xerxen.

At the other end Gudja went close through Terence Vella but in the 12th minute St Andrews took the lead with Jeremy Gatt Coleiro crossing for Patrick Briscoe White to head home from close-range.

Gudja failed to put in a decent reaction and it was the Saints who increased their lead through Ian Borg.

St Andrew’s continued to press forward going again close through Jeremy Gatt Coleiro on two occasions but they made it 3-0 on 62 minutes through Ian Borg.

To make matters worse for Gudja, they were reduced to ten players eight minutes later when Robert Micallef was sent off following an incident with an opposing player.

In the 82nd minute St Andrew’s scored a further goal with Ian Borg finding Anthony Galea unmarked and the latter beat Xerxen from close-range for a 4-0 final scoreline.

Balzan-B' Bugia SP 1-2

B' Bugia's veteran striker Aldrin Muscat made the difference in this match as his two goals gave his team a deserved win over Balzan Youths, the team that they will be facing again this month in the Knock-Out final.

The Saints played the better football throughout the first period and they managed to take the lead in the 15th minute as Aldrin Muscat converted a penalty given for a foul on the same player.

B' Bugia were then denied by Mark Briffa off close-range efforts by James Galea and Aldrin Muscat with Balzan wasting a clear opportunity through Malcolm Tirchett.

B' Bugia continued to push forward and they were again close through John Paul Barbara and Aldrin Muscat.

Balzan replyied through Malcolm Tirchett whose shot was well saved by Matthew Mangion.

During the second period Balzan gained the upper hand in the midfield sector but B' Bugia continued to create the better opportunities and after being denied by Briffa off a header by Aldrin Muscat it was the same player who made it 2-0 in the 73rd minute following good work by Michael Ciappara.

In the 78th minute Malcolm Tirchett, the league leading scorer, pulled a goal back for Balzan and the same player went close to an equaliser two minutes from time with a low shot which was well saved by Mangion.

St.Venera-Balzan Y 2-1

St Venera turned defeat into victory with two goals scored by Ian Falzon and Mark Grech (two substitutes) in the final fifteen minutes.

Balzan are now completely out of the promotion race. Balzan went close after 14 minutes through Malcolm Tirchett whose low shot was blocked by Lightnings’ keeper Rapinett.

Five minutes later St.Venera were denied by Bonello off a Glen Micallef free-kick and on 39 minutes Balzan responded through Marlon Monreal whose shot just missed the target.

At the other end St Venera could have taken the lead but Dylan Mercieca’s shot at goal but the ball hit the side netting.

Balzan opened the score in the 55th minute through Malcolm Tirchett with St.Venera reacting immediately and after going close through Stephen Said they managed to equalise through Ian Falzon.

Then the Lightnings protested for a penalty but they did manage to grab the three points as substitute Mark Grech beat Bonello from close-range.

Lija-Rabat 0-1

This win is sweet revenge for Rabat Ajax who were beaten by Lija during their first-round encounter.

Joe Gerada’s team have now overtaken Balzan Youths in the third position with Lija suffering their seventh defeat of the season.

In the opening stages Rabat created two clear goal scoring opportunities through Kayne Said and Adam Smeir with Lija’s prompt reply producing a low shot by Daniel Scerri which was saved with difficulty by Jonathan Azzopardi.

On another occasion the Lija goalkeeper blocked off a point-blank shot by Adam Smeir.

Early on in the second period Lija’s midfield player Daniel Cremona hit just high over the bar but from then onwards it was Rabat who pressed forward.

They were close through Joe Caruana whose cross-shot hit the upright and then a Kayne Said low shot was saved by Bonnici.

Bonnici was again on hand in the 77th minute with a fine save to deny Angelo Borg and on another occasion a shot by Emanuel Muscat went just wide.

When the match seemed heading to a goalless draw, Rabat got the winning goal in the 86th minute when they gained a penalty for a foul on Adam Smeir and the same player made no mistake from the spot for what proved to be the winning goal.

Seconds from time Lija were given a free-kick with Anthony Gera hitting just high over the bar.

Dingli-Gozo 5-3

The Gozitans were 3-1 ahead early on in the second period against leaders Dingli Swallows but Dingli came back strongly to turn defeat into victory.

The Swallows were then declared Second Division Champions when Mellieha could only draw against Zebbug Rangers.

Dingli Swallows did the early attacking with Roderick Farrugia twice going very close but gradually the Gozitans shared the exchanges and they managed to break the deadlock in the 25th minute through a low shot by Chris Camilleri following a pass by Mark Camilleri.

Then Dingli were denied by Grima off a point-blank shot by Roderick Farrugia but they managed to draw level in the 32nd minute through their best player Darren Roe. In the 43rd minute the Gozitans went 2-1 in front through Chris Camilleri’s second personal goal as Dingli’s reaction produced close efforts by Jeffrey Zammit and Roderick Spiteri.

However it was again Gozo who scored through John Camilleri to make 3-1 but the match was not over yet as from then onwards Dingli’s remarkable recovery materialised.

Jeffrey Zammit reduced the gap in the 67th minute and George Saliba made it three-all in the 80th minute. Dingli now pressed forward and in the 82nd minute they took the lead for the first time in the match as Jason Cachia headed in from a Sapiano corner-kick.

Three minutes from time Dingli were given a penalty for a foul on Etienne Farrugia and Chris Ciappara sealed Dingli’s win from the spot.

Zebbug-Mellieha 2-2

This was a very interesting match with Zebbug Rangers playing one of their best matches this season against Mellieha who are favourites to join Dingli Swallows in the First Division next season.

Mellieha avoided defeat through a 91st minute goal scored by Matthew Borg.

Mellieha had an excellent start to the match as David Fenech’s corner-kick after five minutes beat Rangers’ keeper Duncan Galea.

Zebbug reacted and created good opportunities through Errol Cachia and Josef Felice but they did manage to get back on level terms in the 31st minute through a beauty of a shot by Ramon Bonello following good work by Gordon Mallia.

Zebbug continued to dictate the run of play with the Mellieha keeper bringing off a difficult save to stop a shot by Gordon Mallia.

Six minutes before the change of ends Zebbug scored again through Ramon Bonello to take a 2-1 half-time lead.

On 53 minutes Mellieha had a Tarik goal disallowed for an offside infringement as Zebbug continued to create the better opportunities, twice going very close through Errol Cachia and Gordon Mallia.

Mellieha gradually shared the exchanges and in the 91st minute substitute Matthew Borg headed in from a Borg St.John free-kick to make it two-all.
