I refer to the letter The Balzan Saga by Lino Callus of Balzan (TMID, 1 May).
I would like to inform the correspondent that Bir Bal Street falls under the responsibility of the central government and thus when the council receives requests that concern Bir Bal Street, these are referred to the relative government department or authority.
When the council received a request for the placing of traffic lights in that street we referred the request to the Malta Transport Authority. The authority subsequently decided to carry out the installation of pelican lights at the junction in question, without any consultation with the local council.
The council would like traffic lights to be installed to ease the traffic flow into Bir Bal Street, especially during peak hours, but it does not think that the solution is the installation of pelican lights.
That is the council’s position at present.
