The annual report by the Registrar of Trade Unions, which contains data as on 30 June 2006, has finally been tabled in the House of Representatives and published in the Government Gazette.

The actual figures in the report do not offer any significant change from the previous year’s figures.

The General Workers Union was confirmed the largest union in Malta, with membership increasing from 45,901 to 46,156, including 6,658 pensioners. Union Haddiema Maghqudin was second with 26,129 members, up from 26,018, including 2,301 pensioners.

The Malta Union of Teachers came third with 6,830 members, up from 6,667 while the fourth union last year, MUBE, did not submit any returns this year.

As for employers’ associations, GRTU increased its membership from 6,934 members to 7,225 followed by the Public Transport Association, which remained the same with 430 members, and MHRA, which increased from 280 to 335.

The unions/associations dissolved in the period were Assocjazzjoni tal-Bdiewa, the dockyard’s DSESU, Union Haddiema Universita and the Association of Private Hire Bus Owners.
