Sliema Wanderers grabbed the point they needed against Hibernians to claim the second place in the tables and assure themselves of a place in next season's UEFA Cup. The match played in almost impossible conditions because of the strong winds, was of a high standard, with Hibernians playing a very good match and giving the Wanderers a very good run for their money.

Hibernians even took the lead with Julian Vella's second goal this season, but a Dilello header gave the Wanderers the much needed equaliser. Hibernians were more organised in midfield thanks to a superb display by Chukunyere and Da Silva. Hibernians lost Andrew Cohen in the first half but was well replaced by the energetic Matthew Bartolo.

The Wanderers had Ivan Woods in a rather subdued form, but Rodrick Bajada was again one of his side's best, well supported by Mattocks and Giglio.

Hibernians were more aggressive in the opening minutes and a Scerri half volley landed on the roof of the net. On 18 minutes Giglio floated a good ball towards Madzar who first timed beautifully but his effort went wide.

The Wanderers had Sharlon Pace in a midfield role with Carabott, Dilello, Said and Chetcuti forming the back four.

Hibernians had Terence Scerri, who was again facing referee Attard after the sad incidents in the match against St. George's, as the main striker supported by Cohen and Chukunyere. Da Silva started the match filling Doffo's position.

Madzar who was the most inspiring in the Wanderers' front line, headed towards Bajada whose dipper was tipped against the crossbar by an excellent Muscat. On 36 minutes Da Silva made an impressive run from his own half before passing to Chukunyere who wasted the good work done with a weak effort.

Eight minutes from the break Hibernians lost Cohen who did not recover following a Carabott tackle, with Bartolo taking his place. Chukunyere was again found lacking when he shot directly in Akanji's waiting hands from an ideal position.

On 42 minutes Ivan Woods had a good move beating a couple of Hibs defenders before testing Muscat who blocked his effort.

For the second period Sliema had Muscat in for veteran Carabott, and Hibernians took the lead on 51 minutes. Da Silva split the Sliema defence with a perfect pass towards Julian Vella who beat Akanji with a precise grounder that found the corner of the net.

The Wanderers' reaction was immediate and unlucky as a minute later Bajada's free-kick hit the crossbar after a deflection by keeperMuscat. For the Sliema midfielder this was the second crossbar of the match. Akanji was again called in action a few minutes later saving a Da Silva free-kick.

However Sliema were back on level terms on 68 minutes when defender Mauro Dilello headed home a Claude Mattocks free-kick, with Muscat slightly out of position. This goal killed the Paolites enthusiasm as the Wanderers took the upperhand as they mastered the match to their liking.

However ten minutes from time Chukunyere created havoc in the Wanderers' defence before passing to Scerri who was rather hesitant in front of Akanji.
