Malta Independent Monday, 7 May 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

Qormi and San Gwann finished their season with a bang when they shared eight goals in a spectacular match. To be frank the match sprang to life in the second half when seven goals were scored in the space of 18 minutes.

Thus relegated San Gwann bid farewell to this division in style producing a good display together with Qormi who had in their striker Johann Zammit I their real hero as he scored a poker.

In this match referee Adrian Casha was making a welcome return after a long absence. In fact this was his first appointment this season, having only controlled a Euro Cup match way back in July.

The first half was rather quite and no one would have imagined such a final scoreline. San Gwann took the lead on 21 minutes when a Stajic cross was parried by goalkeeper Camilleri and Alan Borg headed the ball home. Nine minutes from time San Gwann should have easily doubled the score but Roberto Brincat missed an easy chance in front of Camilleri.

The second half was an incredible goal saga with Qormi immediately obtaining the equaliser on 50 minutes. Borg Olivier's cross was met by Johann Zammit I, who shot home on the far post. A minute later San Gwann were back in front when Mauro Brincat scored a gem of a goal beating a couple of opponents on the run before finishing beautifully from an acute angle.

On 55 minutes both sides were back on level terms when from a Chris Vella cross Zammit fired home a typical bombshell. Two minutes later San Gwann made it 3-2 when Roberto Brincat scored from close range following a good Giordemaina cross.

On the hour Qormi again levelled the score when Johann Zammit I, fired home direct from a free-kick.

Five minutes later Qormi went in front for the first time in the match when Johann Zammit I headed home a good Chris Vella cross. Three minutes later San Gwann finished the impressive goal series when Mauro Brincat served Stajic who fired home from close range.

Near the end both sides could have scored further goals, with Qormi finishing the season with ten players when Thomas Paris was sent off for his second bookable offence.
