Melita -Lija Ath 3-1

This is a deserved win for the Amateurs who had an excellent recovery during the second round to finish in a mid-table position.

Lija had their moments during the match but Melita were the better team. Melita had a good first half and on 15 minutes they broke the deadlock as a Mark Hyzler corner-kick was headed in by Michael Martin.

Seconds before the end of the first period, Melita made it 2-0 with Kane Micallef dribbling his way past Ellul and the loose ball was picked up by Jonathan Mifsud scoring from close-range.

Lija reacted well after the break and after going close through Beppe Antignolo, they managed to pull a goal back in the 53rd minute through Alan Ellul.

At the other end Melita went very close through Mark Hyzler and Steve Bonnici but they practically sealed the issue in the 60th minute with a third goal scored by George Gribbon from the penalty spot, a penalty given for a foul by Daniel Scerri on Anthony Briffa.

Ten minutes later Melita’s defender Chris Mifsud Bonnici was booked for a second time and was sent off.

Dingli S-S.Venera L 2-0

Chris Ciappara scored the two goals that allowed Second Division League winners Dingli Swallows to end their commitments for the season with their 14th win of the season.

Dingli’s numerous supporters celebrated their success in style. In a swift counter-attack in the 15th minute Dingli broke the deadlock through their best scorer Chris Ciappara.

St Venera’s reaction was well controlled by Dingli who on their part were very unlucky as the post stopped a shot by Etienne Farrugia in the 30th minute.

Dingli managed to increase their lead in the 56th minute with Chris Ciappara rounding Rapinett and then scored with a low shot.

This was Ciappara’s 16th goal of the season to finish joint leading scorer with Malcolm Tirchett, Balzan’s striker.

St Venera replied through a Glen Micallef corner-kick which was cleared with difficulty by the Dingli defence and in the 73rd minute Dingli scored through Darren Roe but the goal was disallowed for an offside infringement.

In the 85th minute Chris Ciappara could have sealed his hat-trick but he miskicked the ball in front of an open goal and in injury-time Jeffey Zammit hit just wide following a personal effort. After the match Dingli’s captain Edwin Casha was presented with the cup by Mr Carmelo Bartolo, M.F.A.’s vice-president.

Rabat A-Zebbug R 2-0

Rabat Ajax notched their 11th win of the season after beating Zebbug Rangers in a match decided by goals scored by Adam Smeir and Kayne Said. Zebbug will now need to overcome the challenge of three third Division teams (Zurrieq, Fgura Utd and Qrendi) in the Play-Offs to retain their Second Division status.

Adfter six minutes, Rabat’s striker Adam Smeir was floored by Rangers’ defender Ryan Attard in the penalty area and were rightly given a penalty which was converted by Adam Smeir for his 13th goal of the season.

Rabat continued to maintain the initiative and went very close to increasing their lead through Emanuel Muscat and Adam Smeir with Zebbug responding through an Errol Cachia free-kick which was saved with difficulty by Azzopardi.

In the closing stages of the first half Zebbug created two other goal scoring opportunities through Gordon Mallia and Errol Cachia.

After the break Rabat retained the initiative and created various goal scoring opportunities.

On the hour Rabat put the result beyond any doubt with Kayne Said beating Attard from close range following a pass by Adam Smeir.

Then Attard denied Smeir with a fine save and the same Rabat striker wasted a clear opportunity in the 70th minute.

Six minutes later the post denied Rabat off an attempt by Keith Micallef with Zebbug going close late in the match through Keith Farrugia.

Mellieha-Gozo FC 4-1

As expected Mellieha beat bottom team Gozo FC to assure themselves of First Division football next season.

Mellieha broke the deadlock after just six minutes with Wayne Borg St John beat ing Michael Vella from close-range.

Mark Formosa made it one-all from the penalty spot, a penalty given for a foul on Mark Camilleri.

Mellieha score again in the 31st minute through William Borg.

Six minutes later the Mellieha keeper brought off an excellent save to deny Mark Camilleri.

Mellieha dominated the second period with Ibrahim Tarik making it 3-1 in the 59th minute with the Gozitans replying through a Mark Camilleri shot which went inches high over the bar.

Then a shot by Mellieha striker Borg St John was cleared off the line by Patrick Camilleri but in the 68th minute substitute Keith Spiteri added a fourth and final goal for Mellieha
