Foreigners Not harming England national team

Malta Independent Friday, 11 May 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

Foreign players are not harming the England soccer team.

That’s the view of Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore, who believes the influx of foreign players over the last 15 years has improved the quality of the national side.

On the opening weekend of the Premier League in 1992, there were 11 foreign players. Now, foreigners make up 46 percent of all players.

“Half the players registered are qualified to play for England, well over 300,” Scudamore said yesterday. “Where have the other 300 gone? They are clearly playing in the high levels of the Championship.

“We still have the best 300 in the Premier League and surely that is enough to provide a good England team – and they are playing against the best every week. I cannot understand any logic in people saying foreign talent has harmed the development of our national team.”
