60 Second Interview - Clare Agius

Malta Independent Sunday, 13 May 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

If the word ‘eclectic’ did not exist, it may have had to be invented for today’s 60 seconder interviewee. When the well-known TV presenter and actress Clare Agius enters a room the experience is not unlike that of being accosted by a whirlwind. A fuzz of curly hair, an enormous smile, twinkling almond shaped eyes and boundless enthusiasm and energy for doing things are very much Clare’s trademark. This has made her an excellent interviewer in the popular chat show programme Mhux Ghal Kullhadd. She also brings the same zest and enthusiasm to the stage where she has created a number of memorable

characters.

This weekend, theatre lovers can catch her as the assistant of theatre director Ray Calleja in Catastrophe, one of four plays by the Irish playwright Samuel Beckett being performed at St James Cavalier.

Catastrophe is one of Beckett’s last plays and his most overtly political play, dedicated to Vaclav Havel. It is interesting to note that, after the fall of the communist government in Czechoslovakia, crowds famously chanted, ‘Godot has arrived!’ as a rallying cry, in reference to Beckett’s most famous play. Havel, who became President of Czechoslovakia and later of the Czech Republic, himself would later make allusions to the importance of Beckett’s work in terms of his struggle, and his work.

You can see Clare tonight or next week when there will be three more performances of Vain Reasonings – 4 plays by Samuel Beckett.

How old are you? Star sign and date of birth?

Last time I checked...31…I think…because I have a tendency of forgetting my age or which year we’re in for that matter…I’m a Virgo and proud of it…born on 18/09/75.

What would you like to be doing in 10 years’ time?

I live such a hectic life that often I find myself walking around in a frenzy and telling myself how I wish I would have been contented being a librarian or a museum curator…something less stressful…but then again…I’m too hyper so I probably wouldn’t survive for more than a day in one of those jobs. Still I would love to have more of a balance between being creative and leading a peaceful life.

What is your idea of perfect happiness?

Being in harmony with myself, the people I choose to be part of my life and the rest of the animal kingdom.

What is your favourite occupation?

Sleeping.

Significant other?

Yes…I have been in a relationship for almost four years.

What is your greatest fear?

Whatever it is I haven’t been giving it much thought…I don’t focus on things like that…I take everything in my stride and deal with the fears of the time as best I can.

What is it that you most value in your friends?

The ability to be there and not there if you know what I mean…well my true friends know what I mean.

How would you like to die?

Slowly…so I could summon to my bed all the beautiful people in my life and give them all something special in words about life and the beauties of it.

What is your greatest extravagance?

No time for extravagances…it’s not summer yet…that’s when I have my greatest one I guess….my long term holiday around one area of the globe or another.

What is your greatest regret?

Can’t think of any but maybe having hurt someone?..unintentionally maybe …in which case I ask for forgiveness.

What is your most treasured possession?

I hate possessing things but I treasure some pieces for their sentimental value.

Which talent would you most like to have apart from the ones you already have?

I’m fine as is trust me! Quite happy. I mean I would have loved to sing but what for? To have an even crazier lifestyle…no thank you…I’ll stick to growing old and acquiring skills along the way to make for a diverse development of the self.

What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery?

To be hated.

Where would you like to live?

I would like to live in a place connected to the earth and nature as much as possible, possibly with the sea in front of me and the forest behind me.

What is your most marked characteristic?

This is for others to decide not for me.

Who are your heroes/heroines in real life?

Boq…

What is it that you most dislike?

I’ve said it a million times but I’ll say it again…cruelty to animals…for God’s sake let’s learn how to live alongside these creatures!

What is your motto?

Recently I read this fridge magnet and I liked it so I’ll share it with you. Dance like no one is watching, work like you don’t need the money and love like you’ve never been hurt.
