Mqabba 2

St. Patrick 1

Mqabba finally managed to gain promotion to the Premier League, ending a 13 year wait, and several missed chances especially in the past three seasons.

Thus Mqabba managed to crown another good season, that started on a high in the first round, but almost lost everything with a very low profile second round.

Mqabba needing a mere point from their last encounter, had an impressive start when Nicolo Baldacchino put them in front after only 40 seconds play when he beat Azzopardi with a precise grounder.

St Patrick equalised at the start of the second half, when a harmless cross shot by Matthew Scerri was incredibly fumbled by goalkeeper Calleja, with the ball finishing at the back of the net.

Mqabba had some good scoring chances, especially through Nicolo Baldacchino and John Paul Muscat.

However Mqabba were rewarded just before the final whistle when substitute and ex-St Patrick player Gilbert Scerri scored a spectacular goal from the edge of the area after beating a couple of defenders.

Hamrun S 1

Vittoriosa S 1

Newly crowned champions Hamrun Spartans were yesterday held to a 1-1 in their last match of the season by Vittoriosa Stars.

Hamrun thus failed to notch their tenth consecutive victory. After a boring ninety minutes with the Spartans always having territorial superiority, but Vittoriosa played a gallant game especially at the back with Ivan Zammit playing a blinder.

Vittoriosa took a surprise lead on 24 minutes when Robert Adami headed in an Ivan Zammit freekick. Hamrun tried to get back in the match but were never dangerous.

In the second half Hamrun were more determined and obtained the equaliser on 57 minutes when Bratislav Timotic scored from close range after a Stefan Sultana freekick hit the Vittoriosa defensive wall.

Both teams looked happy with the result as the match dragged on till the final whistle, with the numerous and colourful Hamrun Spartans fans giving way to their celebrations. At the end MFA presented Joe Mifsud presented Hamrun Spartans with the championship trophy.
