Ad Launches ‘South Committee’

Malta Independent Monday, 14 May 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

Alternattiva Demokratika – the Green Party (AD) yesterday launched its South Committee during a press conference held in Marsaxlokk.

AD deputy chairperson Stephen Cachia described the setting up of this committee as “another milestone in AD’s history, since for the first time a committee will be permanently working on specific issues related to the southern region of Malta. This also means that residents in the south of Malta will be looked at through a committed group that will be dealing with issues affecting them all the time.”

Mr Cachia said “the south of Malta deserves much better. This region has great potential which has unfortunately gone unnoticed or untapped during the last years due to a lack of coordination between different ministries. Many a time the southern part has been ignored by authorities and we feel that it is about time to make the most of its great potential and give due consideration to the needs of the residents. AD will be closer to the people in the south and have a closer look at their reality and needs.”

During the launch, Mr Cachia, along with the newly set up committee for the south, distributed leaflets with an open message to the people who at the moment were shopping in the open market. A walkabout proceeded during which AD chairman Harry Vassallo and the AD South Committee entourage met with hawkers and commuters and discussed local and environmental issues.

Saviour Sammut, spokesperson for the AD South Committee, said “in the south of Malta the need for change is strongly felt. One of the most pressing needs is for authorities and organisations to listen to the needs of families living here.”

Mr Sammut said that “the right environment should be created, in which residents do not shy away from expressing themselves because of any price they might have to pay for not seeing eye to eye with people in authority. The AD South Committee is promoting equality, social justice, sustainable economy and development, and respect of diversity, all of which are Green values. These values will lead to greater awareness of our potential and enhance the economy which will benefit all residents and visitors.”

One of the first priorities for the AD South Committee will be to encourage frank and open discussion amongst those who have the well being of all those residing in the south at heart. The committee will be coordinating Green Party activities in the different localities in the south and will play a central role in formulating AD’s

policies.
