Labour leader Alfred Sant has been leading “a divided party” for the past 15 years and this can only lead to political uncertainty and instability, the Nationalist Party said in a statement yesterday.

Making reference to what the PN said were problems between two different alliances in the Labour Party, the PN said that Dr Sant’s 15 years spent at the helm of the Labour Party were characterised by internal strife, disagreements and mistaken policies.

Despite the fact that Dr Sant has been trying to deny that there were any problems or disagreements within the party, these are even worse now than they were in 1995, when they were kept secret until the general election was over, the PN said.

The statement said that so bad is the situation within the MLP that MLP deputy leader for party affairs Michael Falzon is so convinced that he was framed up by the Labour Party that he filed a report to the police commissioner and gave him a list of names, asking him to investigate those concerned further and take action against them.

Dr Falzon had publicly said that he had known about the campaign that was being led against him within the Labour Party, and accused a former MLP official, an employee of the Labour Party and other people who spend time at the Labour Party headquarters in Hamrun, the PN said.

Dr Sant’s silence does not reduce the seriousness of the problems, internal strife and divisions in the Labour Party, said the PN, adding that these were the reasons behind the stagnation, increase in the cost of living, taxes and unemployment during the time that Dr Sant was prime minister between 1996 and 1998.
