Senglea Athletic beat relegated Naxxar Lions by the odd goal in five yesterday to finish in fourth place.

Chima Dozie was their most dangerous player scoring a brace, and missing some other good chances.

The match played in a silent atmosphere, with just a few spectators present, was dominated by Senglea in the first part, with Naxxar coming back strongly in the last 30 minutes.

Senglea were by far the better team especially in the first half where they built a two-goal lead and also missed a penalty. Chima Dozie was surely their best player apart from missing the penalty.

Senglea forged ahead on 17 minutes when Silvio Sciberras, who also had a good match, crossed to Chima Dozie who easily scored from close range.

Senglea continued to press forward, in search of the second goal and had a good chance on 28 minutes when Chima Dozie was floored by Spiteri Gonzi, but the same Dozie failed to beat James Mercieca from the penalty spot.

However Senglea doubled the score just before the break with a move that was started by Silvio Sciberras who dribbled past three Naxxar defenders before passing to Dozie who had the easiest of chances with only Mercieca to beat.

The second half started on the same pattern with Senglea on the attack, and they made it three on 55 minutes when Dozie passed to Glenn Bonello who beat Mercieca with a hard drive.

Senglea released the pressure and Naxxar started to come more in the picture as they ventured forward in search of a consolation goal. On 64 minutes Anizoba beat the Senglea defenders on the run to beat George Attard.

Naxxar were now playing the better football and Adrian Fenech was unlucky when his bombshell slammed against the crossbar. However four minutes later Glenn Magri, who came in as a substitute, dribbled his way inside the Senglea penalty area to score Naxxar’s second goal.

The Lions pushed forward in the dying minutes in search of a dramatic equaliser, but the Senglea defence withstood the pressure to finish the season in fourth place.
