Maltese MEP David Casa (EPP-ED) will be sitting on the 60 MEP-strong Climate Change Committee of the European Parliament, created following the proposal made by the chairman of the EPP-ED Group, Joseph Daul, in March this year.

“Representation on this committee is of utmost importance since it will be dealing with policies that will affect not only the environmental aspect but also other sectors,” said Mr Casa.

The committee, which has a mandate for a year, will be formulating proposals on the European Union’s future integrated policy and to coordinate the European Parliament’s position on climate change.

The committee will also evaluate relevant Community legislation and meet with the parliaments and governments of the 27 member states.

“The European Parliament has played a leading role in the debate on the environmental consequences of climate change and is generating further momentum for action. The temporary committee is an essential part of our response to this challenge,” Mr Casa said.

The committee is charged with formulating proposals on the European Union’s future integrated policy on climate change and will coordinate the European Parliament’s position with a view to negotiating the international framework for climate policy after 2012.
