Enemalta Corporation said yesterday that a cable fault that occurred at 7.35pm on Monday, on a feeder from the Marsa power station to the Hal-Far distribution centre, led to a voltage surge that was felt throughout the system and caused power outages in several areas throughout Malta.

The cable fault, which occurred close to the power station, also ignited some dry grass resulting in a small grass fire that was extinguished by the Enemalta Fire Section and the CPD.

The fault also damaged some small control cables located close by, which then resulted in the mal-

function of a number of protection devices, causing further outages, particularly in Santa Venera, Birkirkara, Qormi and surrounding areas, and in Paceville, Pembroke, Ta’ Giorni and Swieqi.

Enemalta said it took immediate steps to locate and isolate the fault and its engineers were dispatched to the various locations to restore the electricity supply.

The first areas had their electricity restored at 9pm and electricity to all areas was restored by 11pm.
