Parliament: Steep Increase in number of children born out of wedlock

While 464 babies born in 2000 were born out of wedlock, the number of babies born out of wedlock has since then increased – to 499 in 2001, 569 in 2002, 678 in 2003, 744 in 2004 and 779 in 2005. The information was provided by Justice and Home Affairs Minister Tonio Borg in reply to a question by Labour MP Stefan Buontempo.

In reply to a question by Silvio Parnis, Health Minister Louis Deguara said the number of child deaths from 2000 to 2006 was: foetal deaths (still births) – 105; perinatal deaths – 194; neonatal deaths – 118 and infant deaths – 147.
