Badminton – H2Only League: Two At the top in the First Division

Malta Independent Thursday, 17 May 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 15 years ago

The Premier Division of this team competition recently came to its end. Pawla Wolves Schtag, who had already secured this season’s prestigious title, ended their commitments in style with a 5-0 defeat of their direct title contenders B’Kara BC.

The Paolites, who went on court with a high morale, faced a somewhat dispirited B’Kara side. The match therefore turned out to be a one-way affair whose final outcome was never in any doubt.

With the Premier Division archived, all eyes now focus on the First Division, in which three teams are striving for the title, with each fixture consisting of two Singles and two Doubles matches.

Spread over three rounds, all the fixtures of this competition are being played on Wednesdays at the Cottonera Sports Complex, starting at 7pm.

After the five matches that have already been played so far, there are two teams at the top of the provisional table.

Pawla Wolves Three-You-Design and B’Kara BC have five points apiece from their initial three fixtures, having won two matches and drawn their direct encounter.

This division is therefore taking the definite shape of a two-horse race, with the leading contenders finely balanced between themselves as evidenced by the 2-2 outcome of their first round direct clash.

Shuttles Fort Blocks, presently in third place, are however not to be written off so lightly. Though not in the title hunt, they are still capable of springing a surprise result on one of the two leading teams.

Any point lost against them could prove vital in the direct second and third round encounters between the Paolites and B’Kara that are expected to decide the destination of this season’s championship title in this division.

The H2Only First Division League will now continue on 30 May when Shuttles Fort Blocks face B’Kara BC.
