The Malta women national team, taking part in the FIRA European Sevens Championships being held in Bosnia and Herzegovina, reached the final and were only beaten 10-5 by Finland after extra time.

Unfortunately, the girls lost the final by an unlucky golden try. The score at the final whistle was 5-5 and so extra time was awarded. In the second half of extra time, Finland scored the ‘golden try’ and play was stopped, as per the rule, to make the game 10-5 to Finland.

After a 7-7 draw with Hungary,through a try and conversion by Esther Farrugia to finish top of the group, the Maltese beat Moldova 17-5 in the semi-final.

There was a try by Esther Farrugia, and two by Tessabelle Sultana and a conversion by Esther. Malta moved onto the final against Finland.

The women’s team has qualified to Division 2A for next year. Next year, four or more teams from Division 2A will qualify for the Rugby Womens World Cup Finals in Dubai, in 2009.
