Cricket: Marsa CC In matches against The Hague

On Thursday and Saturday Marsa CC took on the Hague CC from Holland.

On Saturday Marsa won the toss and elected to bat. Javed Shah and Grant Williams opened the batting and had the scoreboard ticking nicely with 52 runs on the board before Shah was caught for 21 runs. Williams made four more runs then his partner before being bowled. He hit a big six and two fours in his innings.

Frank Spiteri played a marvelous innings scoring 98 runs and was very unlucky not to make a century, he scored 12 fours along the way. The only other valuable scores for the Marsa team came from Joy Ghoseroy and Dave Newton who both made twenty runs each.

The Marsa team totalled 236 runs from their 40 overs. For the visitors, M.Overdijk, J.Veeloo and R.Smits took two wickets each.

The Dutch team began with an explosive innings from their opening batsmen R.Troostwijk who made 55 runs including ten fours and M.Overdijk who scored nine fours in his innings of 46 runs. M.Canters was run out for eight runs by a great piece of fielding by Dave Newton. RJ Canters and J.Veeloo played a match winning partnership which saw them reach their target with four overs to spare. Canters scored 62 runs not out including two sixes and six fours while Veeloo scored 40 runs not out . For Marsa Sarfraz Ali was the main wicket taker with two wickets.

On the Thursday Marsa won the toss and elected to bowl first. The Hague batsmen showed how much they liked to hit the ball. They scored 185 runs of 30 overs but they were also all out, in a40 over game. RJ Canters proving he is one of the best batsmen in the side made 76 runs including eight fours and four sixes. He was caught one handed with the fielder at his full stretch, had he missed it, it would have been six more runs. M.Canters scored 21 runs, J.Overhoff 20 runs, M.Overdijk 15 runs and R.Troostwijk 14 runs not out. For Marsa two great performances were produced by Ronnie Sacco and Dave Newton who both took four wickets each.

Marsa’s run chase started badly losing Sunny Krishna for no runs in the first over. Mike Caruana and M.G.Sacco put on a match winning partnership of 112 runs before Sacco was caught for 46 runs. Caruana kept on batting till the winning runs were made and ended on 73 runs not out. For the visitors M.Overdijk was the main wicket taker with two wickets.

The series ended in a tie.

Next Saturday the Globalair Summer league will commence with Marsa CC playing Melita CC on Saturday at 1pm and Overseas CC playing Krishna CC on Sunday at 10am.

The Nursery/academy will be on Saturday from 9.30am till 11.30am.
